  • Title: Managing Depressive Symptoms In Old Patients With Dementia How Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Can Help

Abstract

Among patients suffering from dementia, major depressive disorder is estimated at 40%. Antidepressants are the first-line treatment for a major depressive episodes. It is also recognised that the elderly suffer from multiple pathologies and are often multi-medicated, with drug interactions exposing them to multiple complications. The use of non-drug therapies could reduce this risks. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) offers this alternative as an effective, easy-to-use treatment for depression, which can be used even at home. It also has no side effects, avoiding the need for drug treatment and the risk of additional drug interactions. In this presentation we propose a review of the efficacy and usefulness of using tDCS in the treatment of depression in elderly patients suffering from dementia.
