  • Title: Deadly Brews and Community Voices A Qualitative Exploration of Unlicensed Alcohol in Rural South Africa

Abstract

This study explores the production, consumption, and socio-cultural impact of unlicensed indigenous alcohols in rural South Africa, with a particular focus on brews such as Xikwembu ni teki, tindava ta vasesi, and Xipanagari. These beverages, often made from locally available ingredients like pineapple, brown bread, and sugar, are prepared under informal and unregulated conditions, posing significant health risks—including methanol poisoning, blindness, and death. Using a qualitative research approach grounded in exploratory, descriptive, and contextual designs, the study draws on in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions conducted in Limpopo Province. Findings reveal that while these brews hold cultural significance and serve as economic lifelines for many, they also contribute to severe public health and social challenges, including domestic violence and youth delinquency. The research underscores the urgent need for community-driven interventions that respect local traditions while promoting safer practices and sustainable alternatives. By amplifying the voices of those most affected, this study offers a nuanced understanding of indigenous alcohol use and its complex role in rural South African life.
